It is with great sadness, the family announces the passing of Melvina Morrisseau, 87, of Couchiching First Nation, on January 20, 2024, at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Melvina was born November 28, 1936, to the late Phillip and Rose Marie Bruyere. Melvina lived most of her life in Couchiching, and on June 12, 1952, was united in marriage to Emil Morrisseau. Together they raised their children and welcomed their grandchildren. She was a hard worker and had several jobs throughout the years, retiring after years of providing homemaking services for Couchiching First Nation. She was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada.
Melvina was a loving and protective mother and grandmother. Melvina enjoyed playing cards, country music, dancing, TV bingo, fishing, trapping, hunting, playing baseball and watching her family play hockey and baseball. One of her favourite places was the family cabin on Stanjikoming Bay. She especially loved being with her family, which led to many large family gatherings where many memories were made. She loved to tell stories and make people laugh with her sense of humour and honesty.
She was predeceased by her parents Phillip and Rose Marie Bruyere; husband Emil; sons Clifford, Faron and Kerry; grandchildren Jesse, Marci, Chuck, Phillip and baby Morrisseau/Vivian; her brother Wayne Bruyere; and her sisters Karen Eppler, Joyce Robinson, Amelia Labelle, Phyllis Johnson and Eleanor Bruyere.
Melvina is survived by children Steven Morrisseau, Marty Morriseau Jr. (Monica), Lorne Morrisseau, Shelly Vivian (George), Sandra Morrisseau (Charlie), Harlan Morrisseau and Dennis Morrisseau (Jolene); grandchildren Randy, Christopher, Leah, Krystal, Emily, Hilary, Heather, Courtney, Marc, Nicole, Paul, Faron, Elizabeth and Gavin; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Couchiching with Father Gino Mathias officiating, with interment in our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Couchiching.
Honourary pallbearers will be her children, grandchildren and friends Shirley Bruce Bruyere, Christie Brown, Joyce Bruyere.
