Gobeil rink still winning

After winning their first two matches yesterday at the Grain Exchange Curling Club in Winnipeg, local OPP officer Scott Gobeil and his rink are leading Group 2 at the 2004 Manitoba Police Curling Championships.
In the first draw, Gobeil, along with third Dave Priestly and second Scott Bell of the Winnipeg City Police as well as lead Dennis Smith of the Thunder Bay OPP, downed the Langrell rink 6-4.
In the second draw of the day, they dumped the Cann rink 6-1 in just five ends.
Gobeil leads Group 2 with a 2-0 record, followed by the Cann and Dennison rinks at 1-1. Langrell is last at 0-2.
Group 1 is being lead by the Nelson rink, which won both its matches against the Stewart and Sierhuis rinks yesterday.
Morken and Sierhuis are tied for second (1-1), with Stewart in last place (0-2).
Gobeil was to face Dennison today, with a victory guaranteeing first place in Group 2.
The playoff format will pit the top rink in Group 1 and 2 in one match, with the winner advancing straight to the final tomorrow.
The loser of that game then will play the winner of the match between the second-place rinks from Group 1 and 2 with the other berth in the final on the line.
The champs will ad-vance to the 49th-annual Canadian Police Curling Championship slated March 13-20 at the Glendale Golf and Country Club in Hamilton.
There also will be a consolation event to determine future championship seeding, which will see the third- and fourth-place teams in both groups face each other.
This bonspiel is open to all police curlers in Manitoba and an area extending 300 miles east of Thunder Bay. This is the first year a police curling championship wasn’t held strictly for Northern Ontario, noted Gobeil.
