The Fort Frances Fire Brigade raised $2,000 for a good cause when they held their “boot drive” for Muscular Dystrophy on Tuesday evening in conjunction with the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship’s parade of boats.
“We did really well,” said Capt. Joe Bobczynski. “We’re very, very appreciative of how generous people were.
“MD will be very happy to hear from us,” he added.
About eight full-time and volunteers firefighters led the parade, carrying fire boots for donations. They also had a fire truck with them, along with their own boat float.
The parade, which went from the old CN station to the big tent at the Sorting Gap Marina, saw thousands of people come out to cheer on the long procession of bass anglers.
“People were well aware we’d be out there,” noted Bobczynski. “As long as the bass people are okay with it, I’m sure we’ll be doing it again next year.”
The drive brought in about $500 the first time they did it two years ago, then about $750 last year.
The fire brigade was hoping to get about $1,000 this time, but ended up effectively doubling that goal.
Thanks to their sponsors (Busch’s Auto Supplies, Ernest Thompson Distributors, and Dare Foods Inc.), the fire brigade also was able to hand out balloons and Freezies along the parade route.
