Ed Katona is no stranger to fundraising.
As the tax collector for the Town of Fort Frances, Katona has a great deal of experience in raising money, but next month, he’ll be doing it in a different way—and for a different cause.
On Sept. 19, Katona will head to Duluth, Mn. on his bike—a trip he hopes to complete in one day. But there’s more to it than that, of course.
Sept. 19 also is the day tens of thousands of people from across Canada and around the world will walk, run, cycle, and in-line skate during the annual Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research.
Unlike most people, however, Katona isn’t simply going to cover a 10-km route in one place. Instead, he hopes to complete the 550-km round trip and be back by Sept. 21—and he needs your help.
On Monday, Katona met with Vanessa Hebert, executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, which once again is organizing this year’s Terry Fox Run, to pick up his T-shirt and officially kick off his personal fundraising campaign.
People now can make pledges for Katona’s “Ride for the Cure” by contacting him directly or through the volunteer bureau’s office in the old CN station on Fourth Street West.
Katona can be reached at home in the evenings at 274-6714 or during business hours at 274-5323 ext. 241.
In related news, those wishing to take part in the regular Terry Fox Run here Sept. 19 can pick up pledge sheets at the volunteer bureau or several businesses around town.
This year’s walk will begin at the volunteer bureau and proceed up Second Street East to Victoria Avenue. From there, it will go south to Front Street and then along the La Verendrye Parkway to Pither’s Point before returning.
The total distance is 10 km.
