Support outdoor values

Dear Mike:
I am getting to the point where I would prefer not to hear the news. I don’t think I would be far off base by stating that less than 10 percent of what we see on television newscasts is positive and cheerful.
The press appears to be more flexible in that it reports what I consider to be news, whether it’s good or bad. In this day of instant communication, on a global basis, it appears bad news travels much faster and sells more copy.
We do not see enough positive actions, however, that does not mean they are non-existent. I was fortunate enough a couple of weeks ago to see what I consider to see politics at work in a productive fashion.
An MP from Saskatchewan, Gary Breitkreuz, has decided to use his position in a manner that would be beneficial to rural Canada. In particular, to defend the heritage values of trapping, hunting, and fishing.
Recognizing the need for that voice in Ottawa, he set out to seek support across the country. Currently there is an “outdoor caucus” in Ottawa with 77 members, including Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats, Bloc Quebecois, and members of the Senate.
I was part of the formation of a coalition while in Ottawa. It’s a long title but essentially as a member from the executive of the O.F.A.H., I was pleased to join with my counterparts from the other nine provinces and two territories to form a loosely-knit but cohesive group of conservationists who have chosen to speak with one voice in support of our heritage activities.
This coalition and the outdoor caucus have enormous potential to achieve common goals by working together.
Five members of the outdoor caucus met with us to discuss our initial plans. It was absolutely wonderful to see a group of politicians work in a non-partisan way towards a common goal.
This concept goes a long way towards restoring my faith in the political process.
This group is working towards satisfying the needs of many in the rural community. For years our voice has not been heard because of our size and lack of clout.
I was absolutely delighted when our Member of Parliament, Ken Boshcoff, walked into our meeting room. I knew he was a part of this group, but had no idea that he had chosen to take the time to meet with us, listen to us, and encourage us on that day.
He took the time from his busy schedule to meet with our group and I publicly thank him for that effort. Our representatives often take shots from the media and constituents.
If outdoor recreation means anything to you, let’s give support when support is due. Do not take it for granted. If you do, you will lose it. If you value it, show you support it in a meaningful way.
I would dearly love to see this concept put into action at the provincial level. The time is ripe and the need has never been greater with the financial gutting of the MNR.
We need a group of like-minded politicians to make their influence felt in Toronto. Can our MPPs work together in a non-partisan fashion like their federal counterparts?
It’s time for accountability—not excuses.
