While town council has agreed to consider hiring crossing guards to monitor King’s Highway in the 2007 budget process, local resident Leslie Danielson is keeping up her efforts to prove just how much they are needed.
At tonight’s regular meeting, Danielson will present council with a petition bearing 26 signatures in agreement that “the Town of Fort Frances should provide crossing guards for local elementary school children who to cross the highway to access their school.”
Danielson’s petition will be accompanied by a letter of support from the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition.
“Ms. Leslie Danielson has brought to our attention that children are required to walk across the highway to attend school, and must do so without the aid of a crossing guard,” wrote RRVSC chair Grace Silander.
“The ages of these children vary, with many being as young as six years old. Ms. Danielson has suggested the use of crossing guards may alleviate injuries of accidents within our community.
“This proactive approach of providing crossing guards may alleviate unnecessary injuries or accidents within our community.
“The Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition supports crossing guards for children who are required to cross the highway to attend school in the Town of Fort Frances,” Silander added.
Tonight’s council meeting is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. It will be preceded by the committee of the whole which, will meet at 5:30 but be in-camera until 6:30.
Other business at tonight’s meeting will include:
•an announcement of the 2006 “Citizen of the Year”;
