VALA planning scavenger hunt

After holding a “Laps for Literacy” earlier this month, the Valley Adult Learning Association has more fundraising events up its sleeve with an inter-agency car rally and scavenger hunt slated here Nov. 13.
“It’ going to be a great time,” VALA literacy instructor Kim Redford said Monday.
The contest, which has an entry fee of $75 per vehicle, will see teams drawn from district agencies, businesses, and organizations, as well as individuals, given a list of items and “literacy tasks” to race around town and complete.
Redford was tight-lipped when asked about the items and tasks, adding “surprises are all part of the fun.”
Contestants will meet at Warp 9 at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13, with the scavenger hunt starting at 7:30 sharp, said Redford.
Teams with completed lists then will rendezvous at the Little Beaver Snow Park lodge, where prizes and entertainment will be provided courtesy of VALA.
The band “North of the Tracks” will be performing.
Redford noted the prizes, including a first-place trophy, will be handed out around 9 p.m. as the hunt only should take people an hour or so to complete.
She added she hopes the trophy will be passed on from year to year as the scavenger hunt becomes a annual tradition here.
Anyone not participating in the scavenger hunt is invited to join the after-party at Little Beaver Snow Park at a cost of $10.
Teams will be receive a tax receipt for the $75 entry fee. Redford said there is no limit to the number of team members as long as they all fit in one vehicle.
While the event isn’t taking place until Nov. 13, Redford noted organizers would like to see all teams registered by Monday, Nov. 8.
The “Laps for Literacy” held Oct. 2 drew about 25 participants and raised around $400. Like the upcoming scavenger hunt, that event was intended to raise both funds for—and awareness of—the local non-profit organization.
VALA, which offers a workplace mentoring program, as well as adult math, computer, and literacy training, is facing increased rent costs, coupled with a need for new learning supplies and upgraded computers.
The agency is planning a third fundraiser in February at the Townshend Theatre. This will be a pair of variety shows—a matinee and an evening performance—featuring the Northern Timbers Trio, Best of Pals Barber Shop Quartet, Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, North of the Tracks, and much more.
