‘Bloom’ project moving ahead

The Fort Frances Communities in Bloom project is moving full-speed ahead. The committee first met on Oct. 5 and developed many great ideas for the project.
The committee looked at a slogan, letterhead, contests, awards, advertising, fundraising, donations, and website ideas. Various ideas were gathered and now the committee is focusing on a plan of action and how to encourage community involvement.
The slogan for the local Communities in Bloom project is “Let our heritage be the root for our community to bloom into the future.”
With the great response received from the National Communities in Bloom representatives and the dedication of the committee, the project no doubt is going to be a huge success.
The ultimate goal of the project is to be recognized nationally in the Communities in Bloom program and compete against other communities of the same size.
But along with this will be an increase in civic pride and community involvement of citizens, groups, organizations, businesses, and municipal government.
The hope is that it will develop into a continuous improvement project for the entire community.
One of the focuses of the program is on environmental awareness and preservation of heritage and culture, which ultimately leads into an improved quality of life.
The overall tidiness, appearance, and visual appeal of Fort Frances will speak on its own to how successful the project will become.
Residents will be able to enter one or more contests in the following categories: front yards, side/back yards, rock gardens, balconies, container gardens, vegetable gardens, patio gardens, and water gardens.
There also will be a prize for the most improved area, and also a block prize where residents can enter themselves as a whole and be judged to see which block is the best looking.
The industrial, commercial, and institutional categories will have the best and worst recognized.
These contests will be an excellent way for the community to become involved in the project—and actually is a necessity because without the residents, business owners, and organizations involved, the project will be unsuccessful.
We all need to come together to work towards the common goal of improving our community for not only the residents to enjoy and feel proud of, but also for visitors to see how much our town is loved.
The committee is open to everyone and meets the first Tuesday of each month in the Committee Room at the Civic Centre.
The next meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Nov. 2) at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Helen Crook at 274-5431.
