Once again, that honourable time of the year is upon us when we take a few moments to pay our respects to the many Canadians who have lost their lives while serving in war.
Saturday, Nov. 11 will see many services honouring war veterans held in rural communities across the district.
A church service will take place at the Barwick Hall at 10 a.m. That will be followed by cenotaph services in Barwick at 11 a.m., Stratton at 11:45 a.m., Devlin at 2 p.m., and Emo at 2:45 p.m.
A lunch is planned for 12:30 p.m. at the Emo Legion.
Then the annual Remembrance Day dinner will be held at the Emo Legion beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased there for $10 each (advance tickets appreciated).

Gerald and Lorraine Bullied won the weekly card game at the Emo Legion, with Adelia Guba and Renee Kivell taking the low.
Ross Brooks won the draw prize.
In other news, the Emo Legion’s 50/50 draw held last Friday (Oct. 20) was won by Amy Taylor, who pocketed $683. Vivian Callaghan sold the winning ticket.
Way to go, girls—I’m sure the money will come in handy with Christmas shopping fast approaching.

Hats off to the Rainy River District Business Women’s Network for hosting an enjoyable tea and fashion show Saturday (Oct. 21) for a packed house at the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau.
The afternoon featured a fashion show made possible by Mark’s Work Warehouse, with hair and make-up for the models, plus some members of the Volunteer Bureau, by the staff of Bombshell.
As well, Anna Cunningham demonstrated fitness routines while Chantel Spuzak showed some of her dance moves.
To top the afternoon off, many delicious desserts and refreshments were enjoyed.
These ladies made for a great way to spend an afternoon. Here’s hoping another one will take place soon.

The latest “tour de Fort” show held Friday night at the Townshend Theatre in Fort Frances offered another pleasurable evening as the talented foursome known as “The Polyjesters” performed a variety of swing, folk, and roots music.
Way to go “tour de Fort” for bringing in another talented Canadian group.

A reminder the George Fox show is coming up Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Townshend Theatre in Fort Frances, with tickets costing $25 each.
Fox performs at a discount price to help raise funds for 4-H clubs. He, himself, was an active 4-H member in his youth and sees the importance of such groups.

Congratulations are in order to two of my favourite people.
First, Freeda Carmody celebrated 15 years of being a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly), which means she has been at her goal weight in TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) for that length of time.
She is the local club’s only member to accomplish this.
TOPS meets each Monday at 7 p.m. at Guthrie United Church in Devlin (weigh-in are held from 6-7 p.m.)
If you need help with your weight, give TOPS a try.
As for my second favourite person, congratulations to Neila Booth, who has been nominated for the Customer Service (Individual) award at this Saturday night’s Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce gala.
Here’s hoping Neila walks away with this award. However, if she doesn’t, many of us still know she is an awesome sales person.

Just a reminder that winter hours at the La Vallee landfill are in effect from Nov. 1 to April 30. The winter hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. andSaturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Meanwhile, if you’d like your driveway plowed out this winter, stop by the municipal office and sign a snowplow waiver or call the office at 486-3452 to request one be mailed to you.
You must sign a waiver before the township can plow your driveway (all outstanding snowplow invoices also must be paid).

Robin’s 2¢:
An elderly man couldn’t be more satisfied with his new pacemaker. In fact, he was so happy, he insisted on showing the information sheet to everyone he came in contact with.
Pointing to one particular paragraph, he would say excitedly, “Look, it comes with a lifetime guarantee!”
