Second-annual chef’s dinner in the works

FORT FRANCES—After staging a successful inaugural “Chef’s Charitable Dinner and Auction” back in January, the local Alzheimer’s Society is looking to make it even better this time around.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the Alzheimer Society for the Kenora/Rainy River districts, said Wednesday she’s already off to a good start organizing the dinner, which will be held Sunday, Jan. 21 at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
She noted she’s in the process of getting area chefs and food suppliers on board for the fundraiser, which has been an outstanding success in Kenora for the past seven years.
So far, Schonewille said, she has chefs from the Emo Inn, La Flambée, and Lee Garden, as well as a couple coming down from Kenora, lending their culinary expertise.
But she added any chefs or suppliers who want to contribute to the event are encouraged to contact her at 1-800-682-0245.
As well, any individual or business wanting to donate auction items should get in touch with Schonewille, who noted she’s open to just about any items they want to donate—whether they’re merchandise, crafts, or even gift certificates for a load of gravel or snow removal service.
Schonewille said the dinner will be similar to the first one, but instead of a set gourmet menu served up over several courses, a wider selection of food will be presented in a buffet.
She added this is better in several ways—by allowing diners to eat exactly what they want (and how much or how little) while being more accommodating to those with any particular allergies.
Schonewille also said she’d like to make sure those dining know which chefs cooked what dishes to better give them the recognition they deserve.
Tickets for the dinner are available at the Adventure Inn, La Flambée, Lee Garden, or the Emo Inn, or by calling the Alzheimer Society at 1-800-682-0245.
You can buy them with cash, cheque, VISA, or Mastercard.
They cost $50 each (buyers will get a $25 tax receipt). A limit of 100 will be sold, stressed Schonewille, adding those interested in attending had better get their tickets A.S.A.P. or they may miss out.
The Alzheimer Society’s chef’s dinner in Kenora is a perennial sell-out.
She noted tickets to the dinner make a great Christmas gift.
In related news, Schonewille said a third-annual book sale will be held at Revco Carpet here on the first weekend of February. Those wanting to donate books can start dropping them off there starting Jan. 21.
Last year’s book sale brought in more than $2,300.
