After responding to a pair of fires at the municipal landfill over the past two weeks, the Fort Frances Fire Department is urging people to be cautious when they dispose of burnt waste from their wood stoves.
Fire Chief Steve Richardson said this morning that all ashes and burnt waste either should be disposed of in a designated area at the landfill, or simply done in an outdoor site on one’s own property (such as a garden).
Improperly-disposed ashes and embers caused the two small fires at the dump, which easily could have been avoided if they had been disposed of properly in the first place, he added.
Chief Richardson noted responding to such fires is an unnecessary cost to taxpayers—not only taking up several hours of the firefighters’ time but sometime involving the use of heavy equipment at the landfill.
