An unattended candle was the cause of fire at a trailer home on Palm Crest Avenue on Tuesday evening, Fort Frances Fire Chief Steve Richardson reported Wednesday.
The Fort Frances Fire Department responded around 7:40 p.m. to a report of a fire in the bathroom at a residence in the Lakeview Trailer Court.
After extinguishing the blaze, which caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, the subsequent investigation revealed a candle had been left burning in the bathroom.
It had tipped over and fell into the plastic sink which, in turn, caught fire and caused damage to the bathroom, said Chief Richardson.
Thankfully, he noted, a smoke detector went off and alerted the residents of the trailer, who then evacuated the premises and called the fire department.
But the unfortunate incident also is a fire safety reminder, said Chief Richardson.
“When you’re burning candles, ensure they’re in a proper holder,” he stressed. “And make sure they are extinguished before you leave the room.”
