Staff members of Rainy River District School Board schools were eager to welcome children to kindergarten with an open house forum held Feb. 24 at all primary grade schools.
Children had an opportunity to meet their teacher and visit the classroom. Staff shared program highlights and was on hand to assist with the registration process.
Each family received a special book bag that contained a book to share with their child as well as information to make sure each child gets off to a great start.
A community effort with the Northwestern Health Unit, the book bag also included nutrition tips and a toothbrush.
J.W. Walker School added excitement to the registration process through use of a school “passport,” which featured locations in the school such as the library, gymnasium, and refreshment stand.
Parents and their children gained familiarity with the school while they had fun and received a stamp for each area visited.
Starting school is a big step for children and their families. Children between the ages of four and six are on the cusp of learning. In kindergarten, children will be given opportunities to create, experience, explore, and enjoy this first step in the journey of life-long learning.
Schools of the Rainy River District School Board are exciting, enriching places for young learners.
They provide strong support for literacy and numeracy, character education, cultural awareness programs, community involvement, door-to-door busing for JK and SK, advanced technology, and much more.
“We are one of the top school boards in Ontario for student to computer ratio,” noted Stephen Danielson, system administrator for the local public board.
Ratios are 5:1 for elementary students and 3:1 for secondary ones.
The Rainy River District School Board will continue to welcome parents and children for kindergarten registration at anytime. To be able to register, junior kindergarten pupils must attain the age of four years before Dec. 31, 2005.
Senior kindergarten pupils must attain the age of five years before Dec. 31, 2005.
As well, the Northwestern Health Unit requests that the child’s Ontario health card number and immunization record be present at the time of registration.
Students who attended junior kindergarten at Rainy River District School Board schools are not required to register for senior kindergarten.
