Gobeil splits opening matches

Scott Gobeil of Fort Frances and his Team Manitoba rink went 1-1 on the opening day of the Canadian Police Curling Championships yesterday at the Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg.
Gobeil, whose rink includes third Tom Norton, second Rob Newman, and lead Pete LeDrew, started out well in romping to an 11-1 win over the Northwest Territories.
But the tables were turned in his second draw against the defending champs from Ontario—now dubbed Team Canada—in a 10-3 loss.
Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec were tied for first at 2-0 heading into play today.
Gobeil, who played third on Clint Barton’s winning rink in 1996 when Fort Frances hosted the event, now will set his sights on Team Saskatchewan (1-1) this afternoon and then Team Ontario tonight.
