Fort Frances town council expressed pride Monday night in Joyce Gosselin, who came back from the 2005 Special Olympics Winter Games in Nagano, Japan last week with a gold medal and two silvers.
“How many communities can say they have a three-medal Olympian? Especially a community this size?” Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft said during council’s regular meeting.
He noted a come-and-go tea to honour Gosselin, who also happens to be the current Citizen of the Year, is slated for this Saturday (March 19) from 1-5 p.m. at the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau (the old CN station).
“I would like to see as many members of the community attend as possible, and certainly as many members of council as possible, to honour Joyce’s achievements,” said Coun. Wiedenhoeft.
“She’s certainly a very deserving Olympian, and would certainly appreciate our attendance at the come-and-go tea,” he added.
Mayor Dan Onichuk agreed Gosselin should be applauded for her achievements.
The mayor also said he’s received a request from a resident that a sign be erected at one of the entrances to town honouring Gosselin, as well as other local athletes of note (such as former NHL players) who have made their mark over the years.
This suggestion was referred to the Economic Development Advisory Committee for a recommendation.
