Muskie boys lose in final

The Muskie boys’ hockey team lost 6-3 to Oak Park in the final of a tournament in Winnipeg on Saturday.
The black-and-gold had started out strong, opening action Thursday with a 6-1 win over Stonewall before dumping Sisler 8-2 on Friday morning.
Then they were supposed to play Tec-Voc, but ended up winning by default. The Winnipeg squad had been hammered 16-0 the game before and didn’t have enough players show up against the Muskies.
“It was a little disappointing,” said Muskie head coach Shane Bliss. “It really wasn’t a great pool.”
That put Fort High into the final against Oak Park, where Bliss said the team had a lot of little things go wrong.
“We haven’t won a final game in that arena for three years,” he noted. “We were hoping it would be different this time, but there’s just something about that place.”
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls’ hockey team split a pair of exhibition games on the road over the weekend.
Sarah O’Sullivan and Carly Holt each scored in the black-and-gold’s 2-1 victory over Moose Lake on Friday night.
But then the girls fell 2-0 to Silver Bay the following night.
“The girls played well regardless,” said head coach Lynn Kellar. “We ran into some trouble with some great goaltending. We had lots of chances but couldn’t seem to finish.”
Finally, the Muskie senior boys’ basketball team finished in third place at the Red Rock North Shore Classic in Nipigon over the weekend.
They had opened play with a 58-35 loss to the Westgate Tigers (Thunder Bay) but then bounced back with a convincing 52-34 triumph over the host Red Rock Lakers.
Then after losing 52-36 to the Sioux Lookout Warriors, the black-and-gold beat Roland Mitchner School (Timmins) 54-40 in the third-place game.
“[The tournament] is indicative of the forward strives our squad has demonstrated in the last few weeks,” said Muskie head coach Paul Noonan.
The Muskie boys’ and girls’ hockey teams resume NorWOSSA action tomorrow (Feb. 7) against the Dryden Eagles. The boys face-off at 7:15 p.m. while the girls start at 7:30 p.m.
The four Muskie court teams will face Kenora here Thursday (Feb. 9) starting at 3:30 p.m.
