Jackpine budworm spraying on schedule

With most of the 12 planes having arrived here, the Ministry of Natural Resources plans to start spraying for jackpine budworm tomorrow (June 1).
Since the planes began arriving last Thursday, the MNR has been preparing for the spraying program by calibrating the planes and mixing the product.
The spraying of the insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, is taking place in the Fort Frances region in order to slow the infestation of jackpine budworm, the population of which usually peaks every 10 years.
When the active ingredient in Bt is ingested by the insects, it produces spores and crystal proteins that kill the insect.
The active ingredient is only fatal to insects with alkaline digestive systems. It does not affect humans nor other animals, and there are no known environmental concerns with its use.
Although some 150,000 hectares are affected by the jackpine budworm outbreak, the spray will treat only 105,000 ha.
Areas being sprayed that have entry points off roads will have signs indicating the spraying is taking place.
MNR personnel also will be providing information in areas which are frequently used, such as cabins, that are near the sections being sprayed.
