Rain and cool weather has reduced the forest fire hazard to “low” all across Northwestern Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported this morning.
This break in the weather is allowing fire crews to continue with proficiency training, and also to conduct training with municipal fire departments and forest industry staff.
There currently are no fires active anywhere in the West Fire Region.
There has been a total of 63 fires in the West Fire Region since the MNR fire season began April 1. These collectively have burned 66.4 hectares.
Fort Frances District has seen three fires so far, burning just 1.8 ha, while Dryden District has had two fires, consuming 0.6 ha.
Kenora District has had 18 fires to date, burning 48.5 ha, while Nipigon District has seen 12 (5.1 ha). Red Lake District has had three fires (0.6 ha), Sioux Lookout District four (1.4 ha), and Thunder Bay District 21 (8.4 ha).
