It was a successful show, and it’s helped more kids play sports to boot.

The Border Figure Skating Club held their first ice show in two years on the Ice for Kids rink at the Memorial Sports Centre on Sunday, April 3, 2022. Named “Happily Ever After,” the show featured club members taking to the ice and showing off the routines they had learned and practiced. Following an extended period of not being able to have their show at all, club president Sandra McNay said they wanted to invite everyone to come down and celebrate the hard work their skaters have done with an on-again-off-again season.

“We had over 80 registered skaters this year but with the pandemic and people not being 100% comfortable we only had about 35 children participate in the ice show,” McNay said.

“We are looking forward to a more regular season next year.”

In recognition of the difficult few years that people in the district have had due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club decided to use their event to help other youth in the district take part in sports. To do this, they adapted their entrance fee for the show to an at-will donation, and took the proceeds and gave them to KidSport. Thanks to the generosity of those going to the show and donating, the club was able to raise $1,279.95 to send along to the KidSport organization, which McNay said will help four children enjoy a sport where they would otherwise not have been able to.

“It was so touching to see people donate to this worthy cause,” McNay said.

“I want to thank everyone who came to the show.”

Border Skating Club skaters Peyton Jourdain, Samantha Halliday, Amelia Dittaro and Emma Rae Pattison, along with coaches Lexi Caul, Shelley Douglas, Nicole Katona and club President Sandra McNay presented KidSport representative Becky Andrusco, right, with a cheque for the donations collected ahead of their annual ice show on Sunday, April 3 at the Memorial Sports Centre. The funds will help four youth in the district take part in sports. – Ken Kellar photo
