Dear editor,
I was told the other day, and I quote, “how brave you were to have the guts to write your letter to the editor.” My thoughts were, “How sad is that?” The person continued to tell me that I would probably be harassed by doing so. My response was, that I, too have a right to express myself. I have thoughts and opinions and deserve to speak in a respectful and positive manner. I do NOT go on Facebook or other social media, such as Rant and Rave to do just that – rant and rave! It’s so very interesting and worrisome that a person can go on some of the sites to tear down people and when one thinks it has done the intended damage, voila, it is removed from the site. You see people being bullied, harassed and intimidated day after day on social media. Is it any wonder that the suicide rate keeps climbing with the mental and emotional abuse that is online? In my humble opinion, these people are extremely insecure and totally incapable of empathy. My Dad would have called them “gutless wonders.”
People really need to think about what they say, because once it’s out there, you can’t take it back and one DOES REMEMBER the nasty words spoken and by whom they were said. I totally lose respect for people who do those things. In destroying someone else’s reputation, you are unwittingly revealing your true lack of character.
As a society, it is time that we ALL try to be kinder and more respectful of one another and treat each other as we would like to be treated. This world would be a far better place if we actually thought, before we opened our mouths. As my beloved Nanny used to say, “If you can’t say anything nice about a person, don’t say anything at all.”
She was a wise lady!
Respectfully,
Diane Maxey
