Seeking Citizen of the Year

Dear editor,

I was disappointed to hear that the custom of crowning a Citizen of the Year would not be realized in 2021, because there were no submissions from the local citizenry.

After some consideration, it became apparent that this year was no different than any other in terms of local community service. I myself become overwhelmed when compelled to reflect on the efforts of those that serve our community through selfless acts of volunteering, bravery and sacrifice. When considering the Citizen of the Year criteria, we see that there are as many or more possible candidates that our town could have celebrated, but unfortunately failed to do so. This is an opportunity we the citizenry have failed to appropriately act on.

The selection Committee, without any “real” candidates to choose from, opted instead to look forward to next year’s submissions. They too have failed and have subsequently missed an opportunity by pursuing that course of action.

I suggest that it may be appropriate that this year, the “Worker” be recognized as the official “Citizen of the Year”. Without labour, we wouldn’t have the excellent commodities and services we utilize everyday and all year long. Labour is what makes Fort Frances and Canada a great place to live. I commend the workers from all sectors of employment who have continued to make our community one we can be proud of, especially during the global pandemic.

I look forward to submitting my nomination for Citizen of the Year for future selection committees to review.

Yours in Solidarity,
Nathan Cousineau C.D.
