Dear editor,
In a report provided to the legislature in 2014, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario indicated the primary role of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests is to support the communities that are dependent on the Crown forest. Fort Frances is one of those communities.
It is the Ministry’s responsibility to meet the objectives set out by the Legislature in the Crown Forest Sustainability Act. The ongoing demolition of the Fort Frances mill is the result of the failure of the Ministry to meet the operational objectives of the Crown Forest Sustainability Act. We have had eight different Ministers and both a Liberal and now a Conservative government between 2010 and 2019. Therefore, this is not politics.
My next letter will show how the Ministry’s support of Resolute during this time was at the expense of the economic future of Fort Frances, surrounding communities, and First Nation, and Metis communities.
Thank you
David Kircher
