Things we seem to forget. Recycling used aluminum cans is just one. It has a huge positive impact on our environment. Not only does it improve the appearance of our communities by eliminating the clutter of discarded cans, it recycles a valuable resource.
Producing aluminum from raw bauxite is very energy intensive. It takes massive amounts of equipment and fossil fuels to mine and transport the raw ore. Then at the smelter again huge amounts of electrical energy are required to smelt and refine the ore into aluminum ingots for use in industry and packaging like aluminum cans.
Recycling aluminum cans on the other hand requires only the collecting, crushing, and smelting of the old cans to produce ‘good as new’ aluminum ingots.
In Rainy River the WRRD Lions spots collection bins at the Rec Centre where you pitch in your used beverage cans. This past Saturday Lions Volunteers spent a couple hours sorting and bagging the lot. A dozen large bags were then delivered to Brent Venables to run through his can crusher. The empties that came from the LCBO were separated and returned for the deposit.
In the end, no litter, some valuable resources saved, and a bit of cash earned to support our community recreation facilities.
So do your part and recycle your aluminum cans and help save your environment.
