(Rainy River District) The Rainy River District OPP are asking for public assistance in locating Thre WINDEGO, age 14, of Seine River First Nation Ontario. Windego was last seen 3rd of February 2021 in the Town of Fort Frances, On. His direction of travel is unknown at this time.

(Rainy River District) The Rainy River District OPP would like to thank the public for its assistance in finding a missing Fort Frances man. Troy Marschalk, 51, has been located safely.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

(NIPIGON, ON) – On January 28th, 2021 the Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a historical sexual assault that occurred in the Township of Red Rock over a decade ago.

A 46 year old male from Red Rock has been charged with four counts of Sexual Assault contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code and three counts of Sexual Interference contrary to section 151 of the Criminal Code.

The name of the accused cannot be released in order to protect the identity of the victims. The accused is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice to answer to these charges.

OPP North West Region Crime Unit continues to investigate these offences with the assistance of the Nipigon OPP Detachment.

HOMICIDE

(MANITOUWADGE, ON) – On January 30, 2021, the Manitouwadge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on Flicker Street in the Township of Manitouwadge.

Police attended the scene and located a male with life threatening injuries. The victim was transported by Superior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as 18 year-old Wayne ALLEN of Manitouwadge.

A 38 year-old Manitouwadge man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with First Degree Murder. The accused has been remanded into custody with an initial court date of February 16, 2021.

OPP North West Region Crime Unit continue to investigate this homicide under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario is also engaged and working in cooperation with the OPP.

COVID CHARGES

(Thunder Bay, ON) The Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Thunder Bay resident following an incident where police were dispatched to a report of a large gathering of people in a private residence.

On January 24, 2021, the Thunder Bay OPP attended a private residence in the Township of Shuniah. When police arrived, they located 23 people inside not adhering to the Reopening Ontario Act.

As a result, a 66 year old Thunder Bay resident was charged with hosting an event at a residential premises that exceeds the number of people permitted, contrary to section 10.1(1) of the Reopening Ontario Act. This offence comes with a fine of $880.

The OPP remind would like to remind everyone to take the public health measures seriously. Legislation is in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the public by mitigating risk of exposure.

FRAUD

(KENORA, ON)The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have seen a dramatic increase in residents falling victim to frauds in the Kenora area.

Police have received multiple calls in Kenora and would like to warn the public that any person requesting money or gift cards over the phone or internet is likely a scam. If there is any concern, contact the Kenora OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Some tips to protect you from being a victim of fraud are:

Do not give money in order to collect a prize.
Do not give out personal information, i.e. banking information or Social Insurance Number, date of birth
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Be cautious if the caller asks for cash, gift cards or money order
Do not get caught up in time constraints. If the caller tells you the offer is time sensitive and pressures you to make a decision, it is probably not a legitimate deal.
If you receive a call for a charity, ask for and check the charity’s registration number online or call the Canada Revenue Agency toll free at 1-800-495-8501. Also, be aware of anyone who thanks you for a pledge you haven’t made.
If you receive any e-mails falsely claiming to be from an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business or government agency. The e-mail may request or direct the consumer to visit a certain website to update or provide personal and/or financial information and passwords. It is really a malicious attempt to collect customer information for the purpose of committing frauds. Do not allow anyone to access your computer unless YOU contacted the company.

DRUG CHARGES

(ATIKOKAN, ON) – On Tuesday January 26, 2021 members of the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), Northwest Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Northwest Region Canine, and the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) warrant at a Mercury Avenue residence is Atikokan.

The officers seized Crystal Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Crack Cocaine, and Cocaine with an approximate street value of $46,000.00.

Officers also seized $5000.00 in cash. Charged are a 20 year old Oshawa man, a 27 year old Thunder Bay woman, and two 32 year old Atikokan residents – one man and one woman – have been charged with:

Possession of Crystal Methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking;
Possession of Cocaine for the purpose of trafficking;
Possession of Fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking; and
Possession of property obtained by crime.
