Calving just around the corner

After viewing my social media apps, I can see that many of us are all doing something similar; cleaning and organizing. The theme I have seen is tossing and putting drawers and closets back in order. It feels good and it will be one of the good benefits of the COVID lockdown. I am starting to wash walls this week. The plan is to get rid of the dust, cobwebs and dog and rabbit hair. I know it will all be back. I have found great satisfaction in finding treasures – some of which need to be kept but others have made it to my burning barrel. I consider these tasks just like a good workout because cleaning can certainly bring on a good sweat.

I brought my cows home for a few days. The first calf heifers required a booster with Scour Bos. Last fall I ended up using a no-name dewormer on a good chunk of my cows as our regular Ivomec was on back order. I am not happy with the no-name version as I think some of my cows seem itchy. I ran the whole herd in and gave them a Boss pour-on. Ideally it should be repeated in two weeks which should work out to be right around the same time I will move them home in preparation for calving. This is safe for the cow and the calf and will not have any residual effects in the milk. Since it is not a needle you don’t need the cow to be so secure so many, I was just able to walk up and pour across their topline. Crossing my fingers, they will feel more comfortable. They are not back in the bush and I will most likely leave them there until early February as calving shouldn’t begin much before February 11.

I finally took the time to write my Christmas/New Year’s letter. For the past several years I don’t even try to get it done before Christmas. I am sure that everyone gets plenty of mail prior to Christmas so this will give them something to read after. 2020 wasn’t a great year so I really didn’t have as much drive to get it written.

I have been busy working on organizing the RRCA AGM scheduled for this Thursday via Zoom. I am trying to get motions organized so that our meeting runs smoothly and efficiently. It really is unfortunate that we are unable to meet in person, but I am certain than our President Louis, will do his best in explaining our building update. We many end up having to host a special member meeting once our lockdown has been lifted. The timelines are going to be very tight with Sales in April and August so planning now is essential in hopes of getting things completed in that time period. Of course, like most building plans we are experiencing some challenges. Stay tuned. If you would like to join our Zoom AGM please reach out to Kim Jo so she can set you up with the link.
