Encounter with a wolf

What is sometimes known as the longest month of the year, is already nearly half over! I think the weather has really helped this! Some years we are we are huddled up because the cold is too much to be outside. If you are on any social media at all there have been many posts with people out enjoying our great outdoors and Mother Nature has been putting on quite a display lately for us to enjoy. I am finding this lockdown hard, but the fresh air and views really do help! If you are able, get out and enjoy.

Our best trails are certainly made by the cows, but we do use the snow machine made trails as well. This weekend I will be bringing the cows home so that our first calf heifers can get their booster shot of the Scour Bos vaccine. I have noticed that some of my cows seem to be itchy. Unfortunately, last fall I didn’t have enough of the regular dewormer (Ivomec) and used a no-name product and it looks like it isn’t doing the trick. Now I will have to see what I can do with a bunch of very pregnant cows that is safe for the cow and calf! We have not put our windbreaks in place for calving, but I am hoping to keep the cows out of the yard for a few weeks yet. The snow depth is still allowing me to haul hay to the back of the property. I walk to check cows two times a day. On Saturday morning I ran into the wolf that was picking through the spots where I feed cows. He didn’t hang around long once he spotted me, but I was a bit concerned that Roxee wouldn’t listen and she would chase him, but she stayed close. Harlee the goat seems to be having feet troubles or maybe arthritis. I am going to take a good look and see if I do some hoof trimming that will offer her some comfort. She reminds me of myself when I was having troubles with planter’s fasciitis, the thought of stepping on my feed some days were dreadful.

The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Annual Meeting is booked for Thursday January 21, 2021. Due to our continued lockdown, this will have to be held via Zoom. You will be able to join in either with your computer or you could call in. You will need to contact me either my email or text so I can send you the join in information. We realize this is less than ideal giving all that we have going on, but we are doing the best that we can! All necessary documents will be sent out prior to the meeting so you will have time to view and prepare questions. Also, another reminder; if you plan on using Rainy River Raised tags for your upcoming tagging season please be sure to order early! They are not fast, and people get frustrated when they are calving, and the tags haven’t come in. Contact for Kim Jo – kimjobliss@gmail.com or 275-9706.

Watch for emails from me regarding a few events coming up that you may be interested in! Everyone is busy organizing normal farm meetings virtually and it is giving us the opportunity to join in!
