Christmas Cheer

With Christmas fast approaching, service clubs, charities and businesses are busy organizing ways for the community to provide for those in need. Here’s a listing of ways to give this holiday season:

Fort Frances GM is organizing a drive to collect items for the Out of the Cold shelter. Register for curbside pick-up before December 17. Items include socks, underwear, toiletries and sweatshirts. For a full listing, visit the Fort Frances GM facebook page or call them at 274-5321.

A Stuff-a-Bus for Pets will be held December 19, from 2-6 p.m. at the Peterbilt parking lot on McIrvine Road. All items collected to be used for local animal rescue groups. This event is organized by local pet treat maker Shannon Carlson. On the wish list are new and used blankets, leashes and collars, for cats and small and large dogs. Wet or dry pet food, treats, non-clumping kitty litter, latex gloves, black garbage bags, food storage baggies (all sizes) and dog toys.

The Family Centre is in need of snacks and other food items for clients of the facility and its food bank. Donations can be dropped off daily at the Old CN Station. They are also accepting hats, mitts and other warm clothing.

The Salvation Army is still accepting adoptive families for its Adopt-a-Family program. Participants are matched with a family in need, and a basic shopping list, to provide a Christmas dinner and toys for a family in need.

The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers for their annual Kettle Campaign. Donations to the program have suffered, due to a shortage of volunteers. All that’s needed is a willingness to help, and two hours of time. To volunteer for a slot, call 274-2429 or e-mail fort.bellringer@salvationarmy.ca.

The Kenora Child and Family Services Angel Tree program is in full swing. The angel ornaments at local retailers each represent a child in need, or in foster care. Details are available about their age, gender and Christmas wishes. Shop for a gift and bring it to the check-out with the ornament to get it to the child for Christmas morning.
