I hope everyone was able to enjoy a great Thanksgiving weekend – with or without turkey. I was fortunate to be able to celebrate with a few friends on Saturday night (with a ton of laughs and teasing) and again on Sunday night with my family. I know I have a lot to be thankful for and I am, but I miss my dad and it is overriding my thankfulness currently. It was hard to not think of him as he was a bit part of all our meals. He felt no one could make stuffing like him. The other thing; he was particular about the time we ate. Not just on holidays but everyday. 5:00 p.m. was the set hour. So, this Sunday we were having troubles getting our turkey cooked and we didn’t get to eat until 6:30 p.m. and the entire time I was thinking boy oh boy would my dad be ticked off about this! I realize time heals and I am thankful for the time I had with my dad but like most, I sure would like more.
Saturday, we attended the Harvest Celebration at Emo Feed with a few of our animals. Maddie and Marlee were busy with hockey, so my mom was my helper. Hats off the Emo Feed staff and families for hosting such a great event. It is all worth it when you see the sparkle in a kid’s eyes when they get to see and touch the animals. The weather also made this event great.
Sunday, we vaccinated and dewormed all our calves that we just weaned. We also delivered some steers to our friends who have been feeding and selling local meat! This fall has been quite pleasant with tasks like this as we are not knee deep in mud. The calves were happy to get out of the corral and I was happy to have them out.
It is crunch time for data at the Research Station and of course I ran into some computer issues. I think we may have figured out how to work through that but now I need to get the data into the program. Why is it that it seems you have lots of time and then BOOM, it is due! Stay tuned, I will be able to give you some yield numbers soon!
This short week is going to be a busy one! We have a cattle sale this Saturday. Let’s hope that the weather will cooperate for us. If you have cattle to sell or if you would like to work at the barn, please get in touch with James 807-271-2005. It is helpful when James knows what cattle you are bringing to the barn as he relays this on to the buyers and they seek out orders for the cattle.
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is hosting a Regional Meeting via zoom this Thursday night. If you are interested in attending and would like more details, please reach out to Lisa Teeple or Bernie Zimmerman. COVID has made things difficult but the organizations are doing a great job of getting members informed in the best ways possible.
