GLENN McLEOD

It is with profound sadness that the family of Glenn McLeod announces his passing on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont. after a valiant battle with lung disease.
Glenn was born on April 6, 1936 in Emo, Ont., the only child of Kenneth and Nellie McLeod. He grew up in Blackhawk, Ont. on the family farm and attended school at Tait #9.
Among his fondest memories were the times when he skipped school to work traplines with his dad and Uncle Norman and live in their cabin at Little Pine Lake. It would become the foundation of Glenn’s strong work ethic.
He learned to guide from his father at Green’s Camp in Nestor Falls, Ont., and went on to do so at Shady Roost and Larsson’s Camp through the 1960s.
In May, 1971, he met his life-long love, Sharon Shaw, at the Nestor Falls Hotel and they married in Atikokan, Ont. on Jan. 8, 1972.
He continued to guide out of Larsson’s Camp outposts until 1975, when he and Sharon purchased what was to become McLeod’s Camp at the government docks in Nestor Falls, expanding to include outposts on Larus Lake, One Pine, and Malette Lakes north of Red Lake, Ont.
He formed a partnership and and purchased Northwest Flying in Nestor Falls to facilitate his growing numbers of outpost guests. He and Sharon sold their north cabins in 1990 and his share of Northwest Flying in 1991.
In 1993 he, with another partner, purchased the Nestor Falls Hotel and Motel–a move which proved to be very successful and an invigorating experience . . . Glenn and Sharon had come full-circle!
During this period, Glenn and Sharon began spending winters in their second home, South Padre Island, Tex., which they continued to do for 22 years.
They sold the hotel and motel and McLeod’s Camp through 2000. With Glenn’s mobility impaired from Parkinson’s disease, he and Sharon sold their Texas home and, in 2016, their Nestor Falls home, and moved to the Golden Age Manor in Emo in March of 2016.
Sadly, Glenn got to enjoy little of his remaining life in the apartment he was so looking forward to sharing with Sharon and the opportunity to share in, even more closely, the lives of Jack and his expanding family.
Glenn was a special human being-a man with strong ethics and a deep passion for his wife and family, his friends, and the beauty of nature. The entrance of his son, Jack, into their lives was a long-hoped-for source of joy and pride.
He enjoyed hunting and spring ice-fishing with Jack, grandson, Cody, and granddaughter, Dana, following the Toronto Maple Leafs and N.Y. Yankees, coffee-ing with friends, meeting new people, many of whom, from all over Canada and the U.S., formed deep and lasting friendships.
His warmth and humour and kindness were his greatest gifts. He lived life fully and will be missed greatly.
Glenn was predeceased by his parents, Ken and Nellie.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; son, Jack Drennan (Sandie); grandson, Cody (Jessica) and little great-granddaughter, Audree Lynn, all of Emo, Ont.; and granddaughter, Dana (Dave) of Kenora, Ont.
He also is survived by his sisters-in-law, Susan (Jim) McQuaker of Emo, Ont. and Sheila (Allan) Kennedy of Marathon, Ont., and brother-in-law, Bernie (Sharon) Shaw of Nanoose Bay, B.C., and their families; and special friends, Greg and Lisa Ferris and family of Finland, Ont.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, with Pastor Sheldon Savage officiating.
The honorary pallbearers will be Dave Beaushene, Ken Burnell, Bill Dingwall, Don Foster Jr., Phil Haggberg, Fred Kolb, Tom Mosbeck, Paul Ogdahl, Ed Showalter, John Stein, Doug Teeple, and Don Viinikka.
Interment will follow at a later date in the Norman Cottam Memorial Garden Cemetery in Nestor Falls.
If desired, in memoriam donations may be to the Friends of Animals or the Emo Hospital (Fetal) Program c/o Northridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 89, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
