Sadly, the family announces the passing of Doug Nielson, 88, formerly of Pattullo Township, Ont., on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont. with his family by his side.
Doug was born on Dec. 6, 1928 in Pattullo Township to Fred and Alice Nielson.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Selman on April 16, 1952 and together they raised their family on a farm in Pattullo Township.
In his younger years, Doug farmed and cut pulpwood, along with driving school bus for more than 25 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
In 2015, Doug left the farm and moved to the Rainy River Health Centre Long-Term Care as his health continued to decline.
Doug will be greatly missed by his children, Brian (Barb) of Emo, Ont., Bruce (Sandy) and Maury (Cindy), all of Stratton, Ont., Roger of Baudette, Mn., and Lonny (Trish) of Clearwater; grandchildren, Tracy (Pat), Kelly (Steve), Amy (Robin), Kevin (Kayla), Krista (Mike), Katelyn, Tyler (Crystal), Carla (Dillon), and Darren; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Kelsey), Hunter, Logan, Ryder, Mya, Bria, Briden, Reed, Jayden, and Evanna; and great-great-granddaughter, Ava.
He also is survived by his sisters, Mona (Lloyd) Hartnell and Lavaun “Babe” Shrumm; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Alice; wife, Evelyn; son, James; brother, Clark; sister, Margaret (Jody) Bjornstead; and brother-in-law, Melburne Shrumm.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held Saturday March 4, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont., with Rev. Frances Flook officiating.
The pallbearers will be Walter Hartnell, Terry Nielson, Larry Medwechuk, Jack Medwechuk, Wayne Peri, and Robin McQuaker.
The honourary pallbearers will be all of Doug’s family and friends.
Interment will take place in Pattullo Cemetery at a later date.
