It is with profound sorrow that the family of Shirley Mae Smith announces her passing on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016 in Couchiching First Nation, Ont.
Shirley was born Dec. 22, 1969 to Gerald and Alice Smith in Fort Frances, Ont.
She grew up in the area and worked as a housekeeper for various businesses.
Shirley enjoyed playing Bingo and hanging out with friends and family. She also enjoyed watching her daughter, Allison, dance at pow-wows.
When Shirley wasn’t busy running errands for herself or others, she enjoyed her DejaView Channel on TV, Jack Tripper was one of her favourite characters to watch, as well as Archie Bunker.
Shirley also loved spending time with her grandchildren and was especially close with her grandson, Isaias. She even was close with her niece Sherri’s children, Calise and Treyton-Jay.
Shirley leaves behind her daughter, Rebecca Smith (Cote McGinnis); partner, Marvin Fering; mother, Alice Smith; grandchildren, Mila McGinnis and Isaias Lockman; stepchildren, Abram Fering and Crystal Ness; and siblings, Roger Smith, Donna Smith (Dave Williams), Cindy Lou Medicine, Kevin Smith (Terry), Jason Smith (Katherine), Gerald Smith Jr., and Stewart Smith.
Shirley was predeceased by her father, Gerald Smith Sr.; and grandparents John & Margaret Smith and Alphonse & Mary Smith.
A visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the Couchiching First Nation multi-use facility, with Pastor Sean Ward officiating.
The pallbearers were Pat Morrisseau, Val Perreault, Duane Morrison, Richard Morrison, Dale Morrisseau, Cote McGinnis, Sean Smith, Justin McGinnis, Wes Debungee, Les Martin, Chuck Windigo, Trevor Moyer, Carl Paypom, Al Lockman, Trevor Smith, Kerri Morrisseau, and Tim Bruyere.
The honourary pallbearers were Marvin Fering, Gladys McPherson, Louise Morrisseau, Florence Yerxa, Ernestine Councillor, Pam Debungee, Kip Mainville, Alice Smith, and RoseMarie Tuesday.
