PHYLLIS ‘WIIS’ TOM

On Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 at the Winnipeg Health Science Centre, Phyllis Tom, 61, of Winnipeg, MB, peacefully passed away.
Phyllis was born on March 29, 1953 in Emo, ON, to Percy and Frances Tom.
Phyllis’ favourite pastime was playing Bingo. She enjoyed walking and visiting with friends in the city. During the summers, she could often be found on the pow-wow trail.
She and Stan loved to challenge visitors to a game of cribbage. She was also quite the pool “shark” in her younger years. She spent summers working in tourist camps, doing bush work, waitressing and bartending.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Joe Elzby (born Stacy Tom); her siblings, Charlene Calder (Brad), Stuart Hettinga (born Stuart Tom), and (Bonnie) Tom Brassoy (born Ted Tom); as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Frances Tom; and sister, Amy Gilchrist (born Amelia Tom).
A traditional wake was held at the Big Grassy River First Nation Community Hall on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, followed by a traditional service at the hall on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 with Elder Dan Big George Sr. officiating. Interment took place in Big Grassy River First Nation Cemetery.
Pallbearers where Joe Cochrane, Derrick Cochrane, Alex Cochrane, Michael Cochrane, Dion Howard, Jay Wayash-Calder and Bob Calder.
Honourary pallbearers were Lila Boshkaykin, Mary Vivier, Patsy Tuesday, Marilyn Major, Lorna Cochrane, and Sandra Cochrane.
