DANIEL (DAN) ALEXANDER MIECHKOTA

Daniel (Dan) Alexander Miechkota passed away suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
Dan was born in Quibell, Ont. on Dec. 18, 1938.
He is survived by his loving wife, Velma, of 53 years; son, Robert (Jacqueline); daughter, Michele (Al); grandson, Michael; and granddaughter, Jill.
He also will be deeply missed by his cherished cousins, Gloria (Hank), Linda (George), Barb (Wayne), Dani, Chris, and Rick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Anne; siblings, Roy, Marie, and Peter; as well as father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Irene; brothers-in-law, Derl (Grace) and Bill; and sisters-in-law, Alice (Albert) and Joan.
Daniel grew up in Barwick, Ont., where he spent most of his time making lifelong friendships. At the age of 16, he left to work on the CNR.
Through a friend at CN, he was introduced to the love of his life, Velma. They married and made their home in St. Vital, where they raised two children.
Dan was a very active member in the Glenwood community, where he coached hockey, baseball, and football, and was an avid curler at the St. Vital Curling Club.
Dan and Velma enjoyed going to many dances, and they built and enjoyed the many friendships they made in the community while playing slo-pitch.
Aside from being a loving father, Dan felt blessed to have two beautiful grandchildren.
After his retirement in 1995, Dan was dedicated to spending as much time as possible snowmobiling, skating, quading, and tobogganing with Michael and Jill.
In 2000, Dan and Velma retired to Victoria Beach, where they developed many friendships and made fond memories.
Dan was a true gentleman and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb, 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
