Kenneth Elmer Carlson, 78, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
He was born Dec. 28, 1934 in Tovell Township, Ont. and had lived all of his life in Rainy River District.
In 1951, Kenneth began work at the Canadian National Railways in the freight department located in Fort Frances. During his 38-year career, he also worked as a train messenger, in the yard office, and the shops.
He later worked in Rainy River, Ont. before moving to Thunder Bay, Ont., where he retired in 1989.
In the 1960s, while working at the C.N.R., he also owned and operated his own gravel truck and had worked for various contractors in the area.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Throughout the years, he spent many summers camping and vacationing with his family.
He also enjoyed gardening and the vegetables it produced. He liked to relax at home, and have a barbecue or bonfire in his yard.
On April 22, 1960, Kenneth was united in marriage to Shirley Harwood, who predeceased him on Jan. 18, 1984.
The family includes son, Brad Carlson and wife, Janice, of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter, Cheryl and husband, Richard Boon, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and grandchildren, Jon and Courtney Carlson of Fort Frances, Ont., Jason Boon of Simcoe, Ont., and Jennifer and Amanda Boon of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Also surviving are his sister, Arlene Lamb of Fort Frances, Ont.; nephew, William Lamb Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and nieces, Sharlene and husband, John Fisher, of Thunder Bay, Ont., Shelley and husband, Peter White, of London, Ont., and Kari and husband, Larry Shine, of Dryden, Ont.
Besides his wife Shirley, Kenneth was predeceased by his father, Maurits Carlson; mother, Edla Orwick; brothers-in-law, William Lamb Sr., and Arthur, Wesley, and Leroy Harwood, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Harwood, Anne Podscalny, Lorena Colvin, and Iona McCarthy; and long-time friend, Lorraine Norris.
Friends may visit Monday, Oct. 28, from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Green Funeral Home.
Rev. Brian Keffer will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
The pallbearers will be Brad Carlson, Richard Boon, Jon Carlson, Ron Patrick, Don Patrick, and Frank DeBenedet.
