GERMAINE MARY ROTH

It is with great sadness that the family of Germaine Mary Roth announces her passing on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont., 23 days short of her 103rd birthday.
Germaine was born Sept. 29, 1910 in Pinewood, Ont. She was one of nine children and grew up on the family farm.
She married Norman Roth on April 17, 1933 and together they settled in Rainy River, Ont., then later in Fort Frances, to raise their family.
She worked at La Verendrye General Hospital for 22 years as a dietitian and pastry chef, where she was liked and respected. Years later, staff still would approach her to talk about their time in the kitchen together.
After retiring, Germaine travelled every chance she got. In fact, she spent so much time away that one of her daughters started calling her the Roadrunner.
One of her favourite trips was to British Columbia, a 99th birthday present, to visit with family.
When at home, Germaine always kept busy; her hands were continuously knitting for the grandchildren, doing cross-stitch or other crafts. She also loved being with family and friends, and welcomed all with her excellent cooking.
Gardening was another of her passions, so much so it seemed like she had 10 green thumbs. Even after moving to Columbus Place, she continued to grow tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and flowers on her balcony every year.
She was a long-time member of the C.W.L. and had strong Catholic beliefs.
Germaine was predeceased by her parents Adelord and Olivine Desserre; husband, Norman; son, Donald; sons-in-law, Ernie Multamaki, John Hacking, and Harry Belbas; daughter-in-law, Maureen Roth; brothers, Edward, Wilfred, Alphonse, and Eugene Desserre; and sisters-in-law, Florence, Arvella, Sophie, Sally, and Marion.
Germaine leaves behind her children, June Hacking, Harold (Priscilla) Roth, Ellen Belbas, Geraldine (Bill) Cullen, Dwaine (Leony) Roth, and Earl Roth; grandchildren, Vicki (Wayne) Jewell, Don (Patti) Roth, Glenda (Ken) Hatfield, Colleen (Dale) Brunetta, Randi (Ray) Gladu, Diana (Lauri) Kangas, Jamie (Tina) Roth, Linda Angus, Wayne (Sue) Storey, Larry (Dawn) Storey, JoAnne (Ray) Sims, Michael (Adriana) Roth, Geoffrey (Kaarina) Roth, Andy Multamaki, Wendy Fulton, Sherri (Ray) Weremczuk, Tamara (Mark) Davies, Maria (Bud) Roth, Elizabeth (Balin) Roth, Cheryl (Wayne) Angus, and Bruce Roth; 27 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
She also is survived by her sisters, Jean Langen, Celina (Nick) Chuhay, and Lilia Williamson (Stan Melanson); brother, Lawrence (Ella) Desserre; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, with Fr. Victor DeGagne officiating.
The pallbearers were Don Roth, Jamie Roth, Bruce Roth, Andy Multamaki, Adam Jewell, and Jeff Angus.
Should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the Riverside Foundation for Health Care for the Palliative Care Room at La Verendrye General Hospital, 110 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2B7.
