William Peter Miechkota, 72, entered into eternal life on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. as a consequence of cancer.
Born April 8, 1941 in Winnipeg, Man., and having been raised in Barwick, Ont., Peter attended high school in Fort Frances.
His career began at the age of 18 as a signal helper with the Canadian National Railway in Sioux Lookout, Ont. After 16 years of service as a Signal Supervisor, his job was eliminated.
Peter then was asked to work for the federal government as a Signal System Officer with the Railway Transport Committee. This work began in Moncton, N.B. as his headquarters in the Atlantic region. Peter enjoyed his work with the federal government, meeting with the railway and road authority and discussing the safety of railway and road crossings.
Peter was predeceased by his father, Michael; mother, Annie; brother, Roy; and sister, Marie Hamilton.
Surviving are his brother, Daniel and his wife, Velma; and three daughters, Kim Haldorson, Brenda and her husband, Jeff Hamilton, and Peggy.
Peter also is survived by two grandchildren, Joseph and Jennifer Christie.
Viewing will take place Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Knysh Funeral Chapel, located at 1442 Main St. in Winnipeg, Man.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, located at 250 Jefferson Ave. in Winnipeg.
Interment will take place Friday, May 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Chapple Cemetery, which is located three km north of Barwick. Anyone wishing to attend the interment is welcome.
