GILBERT GRANT GILLIES

Gilbert Gillies, formerly of Emo, Ont., passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at his residence at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont. at the age of 92.
Gilbert was born May 11, 1920 to William (Bill) and Erma Gillies of Emo. He was united in marriage on Jan. 21, 1942 to his “Doll,” Ruby Etta Sanderson.
Dad could do most things he set his mind to. He farmed with his dad, sold eggs door-to-door, he worked at various jobs, including Arctic Peat Moss, McVeys Garage, cut and sold timber, farming, and a partner in a welding and machine shop, and he raised a large family.
In 1965, he sold 70 head of cattle and worked as a heavy-duty mechanic for Mando bush camps. In 1967, he moved the family to Atikokan, Ont., returning to retire in Emo in 1974.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruby; his daughters, Marjorie (Jack) Roemer, Evelyn Matthews, Marlene Gillies, Betty (Cliff) Holborn, Janet (Frank) Cseke, and Sharon (Doug) Brusven; daughter-in-law, Mary Gillies; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Erma Gillies; son, Douglas (2005); and son-in-law, Larry Matthews (2004).
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in Hallet Hall at Rainycrest Long Term Care, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont.
