Lloyd Wheatley, 96, of the Golden Age Manor, 182 Front St., Emo, Ont., passed away at his residence on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1915 to T.E. Wheatley and Agnes Wheatley (nee Oxley) at Watrous, Sask.
He lived on the family farm 11 miles north east of Watrous until 1936.
In 1936, they moved to Barwick, Ont. In 1938, he bought land in Rainy River district.
In April, 1942, Lloyd enlisted in the RCAF. He took his basic training in Brandon, Man. and, upon completion, was posted in England, serving as a rear gunner on a Halifax bomber.
In 1943, on his fifth mission, his plane was shot down and he spent 18 months in a POW camp in Elbe, Germany.
After returning to Canada, he married Myrtle Gohn on July 23, 1945.
He farmed in Barwick from 1945-70. In 1970, they left the farm to briefly operate a bakery in Nestor Falls, Ont. Then in 1972, they moved to Montreal, Que., where Myrtle and Lloyd worked as a husband-and-wife team at Welcome Hall Mission until their retirement in 1978, when they returned to Barwick.
In 1996, they moved to the Golden Age Manor in Emo.
During his retirement, Lloyd actively was involved in the community. He also loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and many friends.
His strong faith sustained him through the ups and downs over the years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle; and two brothers, Clark Wheatley and Ted Shearer.
Lloyd is survived by four children, Lyle Wheatley and wife, June, of Barwick, Ont., Erle Wheatley and wife, Jan, of Thunder Bay, Ont., Anne Forget and husband, Paul, of Fort Frances, Ont., and Joan and husband, Jessie Bissoon, of Winnipeg, Man.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Glenn and wife, Michelle Flatt, Rozanne, Melody and husband, Mike Shute, Benjamin and wife, Trista, Andrew, and Caitlin Wheatley, Nelson Haney and wife, Ruth, and Jasmine and Chandra Bissoon; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Haney and wife, Kim, Benjamin Haney, and Lila Shute; as well as several great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, where funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 at 11 a.m, with Pastor Mark Mast officiating.
Interment will take place at the Chapple Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Andrew Wheatley, Benjamin Wheatley, Glenn Flatt, Jessie Bissoon, Paul Forget, and Ernest Georgeson.
A luncheon will follow at the Barwick Hall.
