Arthur William Wood, 80, of 535 Lillie Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Arthur was born in Blue Township (Sleeman, Ont.) on June 6, 1929.
He moved to Fort Frances with his family at age 15 and went to work for Clarence Wright as a town bus driver, and it was during his bus runs that he met his wife, Beatrice Wood.
They married on April 28, 1950.
Art then began to work for the Eaton’s department store as shipper/receiver and delivery. This lasted for almost 10 years until he moved on to work for the CNR Freight department.
When CN cut the freight delivery service to Fort Frances, he worked for a short time with Silver & Kircher Contractors before taking a job with Kingsway Transport. Around the time when Kingsway became Gardewine, he took a job at the paper mill as security guard for five years, at which time his health failed and he no longer was able to work.
Art was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time with family and friends camping at Lake of the Woods. He also liked gardening and carpentry, and was very handy at repairing things.
He enjoyed family get-togethers, and his home was always open to many out-of-town relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nathan and Amy Wood; one brother, Robert; one sister, Helen; and two infant sisters.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Beatrice Wood of Fort Frances, Ont.; four children, Brenda and husband, Garry Franson, of Hinton, Alta., Bruce Wood and wife, Connie (nee Perrier), of Alberton Township, Ont.., and Gail and husband, Doug Langtry, and Glen Wood and wife, Diane (nee Bedard), all of Fort Frances, Ont.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by two sisters, Edith Richert of Fort Frances, Ont. and Alice Shurvell of Brandon, Man.; one sister-in-law, Violet Hands of Fort Frances, Ont..; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place at Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Mn.
A graveside service will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
