Margaret Ann Agar, 97, passed away peacefully at her home at 550 Osborne St. in Fort Frances, Ont.
Margaret was born Feb. 1, 1912 in Kenora, Ont. to John and Nellie Codd. She was the second of five children.
She grew up and attended elementary and secondary school in Kenora. With the encouragement of her father and brothers, she participated in many sports and learned to play the piano.
Upon graduation, she went to work for the Kenora telephone system as an operator—a job she greatly enjoyed.
In 1941, she married Elswood Agar, with whom she had two sons.
In 1950, Marg and E.A., with their sons, moved to Fort Frances, where she continued to raise her family and participate in golf and curling. The family acquired a cottage on Rainy Lake, where for many summers they entertained family and friends.
She was an avid walker, to which she attributed her long life. She also loved to play bridge, and was a member of several long-lasting bridge clubs.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and was proud of their accomplishments in the fields of academia, sports, and the theatre. She proudly showed friends newspaper articles about the accomplishments of Robyn, Kelly, and Ali.
Marg is survived by her son, Doug (Wendy) of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Jayne of Thunder Bay, Ont.; granddaughters, Robyn (Chip) of Milwaukee, Wis., Kelly (Andy) of Winnipeg, Man., and Alison of Toronto, Ont.; and great-grandson, Jack Slater of Milwaukee, Wis.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elswood, in 1984; her son, John, in 2008; and her siblings, Douglas Codd, Barbara Mixell, William Codd, and John Codd.
At Margaret’s request, cremation has taken place.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada c/o Mary Jane Pearson, 1167 River Rd. W., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2V3 or the Memorial Fund at St. John’s Anglican Church, 360 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 1E1.
