It is with deepest sadness we regretfully announce the sudden passing of Alan Edward McCormick, 68, of 1006 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2009 in Mine Centre, Ont.
He was born Feb. 7, 1940 in Carpenter Township, Ont.
A resident of the district his entire life, Al started work at an early age as a tourist guide on Clearwater Lake, then in August, 1956 went on to work for Selco Mining Company for 20 years. In 1978, he began his career as a correctional officer for the Fort Frances Jail until he retired in 2002.
Al worked every day of his life, prospecting various districts in Northwestern Ontario, not to mention all the various jobs in between—there was never a job to big or too small for Al. He took pride in everything he did.
Alan was a member of the local International Order of Oddfellows Cascade Lodge #351, and looked after the CPNT committee for a number of years and took joy in helping local people in need.
Al’s favourite pastimes where fishing, hunting, story-telling, and spending time with family and friends at his beloved cabin on Shoal Lake Road in Mine Centre. You always could find Al up at the garage, tinkering, fixing, ripping apart, and figuring out how to make things work.
Alan was predeceased by his wife, Eva, in 1991. He also was predeceased by his father, Ted McCormick.
He is survived by his mother, Marg McCormick; his partner, Betty Maguire; and his children, Cindy (Terry), Connie (Randy), Darren (Sandra), Mike (Kristen), Candace (Brent), Maureen (Paul LeMesurier), and Darcy (Jody) Maguire.
He also is survived by his grandchildren, Brody, Brayden, Jesse, Jonah, Shaye, Tanner, Taylor, Lindsay, and Maggie.
Surviving siblings are Jack, Len (Mabel), Clifford (Lorraine), Brian, Barry (Linda), Tom (Joanne), Marilyn (Brian Peacock), Cheryl (Ken Hughes), and LeeAnn Arden. And he also leaves behind his loyal pal, “Kujo.”
Alan had many friends, family, and neighbours who loved him dearly. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Barbara Miller officiating.
