HARRY VANDETTI

Our Dad, Harry Vandetti passed away peacefully early Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 at his home for the past year, Rainycrest Home for the Aged. Dad was born March 8, 1925 in Winnipeg, MB to Tony and Lucy Vandetti. Dad Lived in Mine Centre as a young boy then moved to Fort Frances where he attended Robert Moore School and the Fort Frances High School, following high school Harry joined up with the Canadian Air Force where he lived in Thunder Bay and Kingston. Harry “Scoop” Vandetti attended Carleton University in Ottawa before returning to Fort Frances to begin his journalism and farming career. In 1958, Harry and Emily purchased their farm in Crozier, where they raised their family and enjoyed many happy years on River Road. To Dad, there was no place better than the farm, Fort Frances and
the Rainy River District!
On October 19, 1951, Dad married his beautiful bride, Emily (Shortreed) who predeceased him August 22, 2000. At her passing, he remarked, “I have lost my anchor”. He leaves to mourn, his only son Earl & Laureen, grandchildren Alexis & Jordan, daughter Sara & Ted Aarestad, daughter Marion and David Allison, grandchildren Avery, Olivia and Isabella, daughter Carolyn, cousin Claude & Penny McFarland and sister-in-law Winona Pizzey.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, his Aunt Grace Foord, his brothers-in-law Kenneth Shortreed, John Madill and John Pizzey, and most recently by his sister-in-law Gail Madill.
A scholarship is being set up for a deserving Fort Frances High School student. Donations to this scholarship can be made at CIBC or to the charity of your choice.
On January 22, 2003 Dad wrote a column on his life. This column will be in next Wednesday’s paper. A come and go tea for family and friends will be announced at that time. A private family committal will be held at a later date.
