Anthony (Tony) Joseph O’Neil, 96, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
Tony was born March 6, 1912 in Rainy River, Ont. to the late Jack and Louise O’Neil, and had lived all his life in the district. He had worked for 35 years at the local paper mill, retiring in 1977 as a millwright.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and also was very active in the community, especially with Kiwanis, cooking for the steak fry, selling tickets, and helping with auctions and Meals on Wheels. He also was a significant supporter of Sunny Cove Camp.
In his younger years, he enjoyed sports and playing baseball. He was an outdoors person who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his younger years was a guide during the summer. He later spent many summer vacations guiding in the Arctic.
Tony is survived by his daughter, Grace, of Winnipeg, Man.; four grandchildren, Patricia Kitchen of Moose Jaw, Sask., Katherine Tysz of Fort Frances, Ont., Brenda Robinson of Elkford, B.C., and Elizabeth Kloepfer of Winnipeg, Man.; as well as several nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Bernice, and his second wife, Jeanette. He also was predeceased by 10 siblings; a step-son, Larry Perkins; and a granddaughter, Irene Davidson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Fr. Francis Pudicherry will officiate, followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Friends may visit prior to the service Monday at the church.
The pallbearers will be Frank Strain, Herman Rodrigues, Harold Huntley, Steve Buttner, David Chambers, and Peter Boon.
