Gordon Campbell, 83, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Rainycrest in Fort Frances.
Gordon was born Sept. 23, 1924 to the late Walter Campbell and Christine Campbell (Carpenter) of Winnipeg, Man.
Gordon enlisted in the army as a Small Arms Instructor, later serving extensively overseas with the PPCLI Light Infantry during World War II.
Gordon later married, and enjoyed a very special union of 40 years, to wife Cora (Dresden) of Tyler, Mn. Together, Cora and Gordon enjoyed their family and friends, and often opened their home to passing strangers.
Gordon sadly missed the passing of his wife, and also was predeceased by his mother, father, and sister (Mabel Hollander), all of Winnipeg, Man.
Gordon was employed by the Ministry of Government Services as maintenance supervisor in Fort Frances, retiring in 1986, and later retired his seasonal position with the Canadian National Railway in 1990.
He took great pride and cherished many lasting memories gained through his affiliation with our local Legion. He always shared a love of music with his family and friends.
Surviving are his sisters, Jean Taylor of Thunder Bay, Ont. and Debbie Penner of Winnipeg, Man.; and brothers, Donald Campbell of Winnipeg, Man., Edward Campbell of Fort Frances, Ont., and Kenneth Campbell of Winnipeg, Man.
Also surviving are his children, Rick Campbell, Tom Campbell, Christie Campbell, Gordon Campbell Jr., Darren Campbell, Connie Ellis, and Daniel Ellis, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At his request, a memorial service was held Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Green’s Funeral Home in Fort Frances. The Legion Br. #29 Colour Party attended to honour Gordon and our many veterans of war.
A luncheon followed downstairs at our local Legion Br. #29.
Interment took place Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
