Ed Gladu, 94, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2007.
He was born June 3, 1913 in Ste. Anne, Man. to Alfred and Victoria, and was raised in southern Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army and served as Provost overseas, and stayed for one year of army occupation in Germany.
After returning to Canada in 1946, he worked in lumber camps and harvested crops. He joined his brother, Ted, in Fort Frances and went to work for the local paper mill.
He retired from the mill as a power house operator in 1978.
He was united in marriage to Mildred “Millie” Eide on July 15, 1949.
Ed loved to be outdoors, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Millie spent many summers on the lake and during the winter they went to Arizona, where he continued to walk and hike daily.
He was a very active man who lifted weights and bicycled daily until the age of 90.
He is survived by his daughter, Rochelle and husband, Mark Patten, of Minneapolis, Mn.; son, Randy Gladu of Edmonton, Alta.; and grandchildren, Lee Patten of Miami, Fla., Romain (Melanie) of Edmonton, Alta., Travis of Phuket, Thailand, Jeremiah (Lovina) Gladu and their daughter, Aries, of St. John, B.C., Cheri Lynn Gladu of Sudbury, Ont., and Angel Gladu of Toronto, Ont.
Also surviving are his sister, Bibiann Marshall of Good Samaritan Home of International Falls, Mn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances. A reception will follow.
Cremation has taken place and interment will be held in the Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
