DAVID STANLEY McLAREN

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Stanley McLaren.
Stan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Sarah (nee Martin); daughters, Dawn Eliens of Saskatoon, Sask. and Wendy (Allan) Marshall of Sioux Lookout, Ont.; and son, Martin of Winnipeg, Man.
Also surviving are his granddaughter, Twyla (Alex) Oleksuk of Thunder Bay, Ont.; grandsons, Stan (Krista) Marshall of Sioux Lookout, Ont., and Angus and Conner McLaren of Winnipeg, Man; and great-grandchildren, Danielle and Ryan Oleksuk of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Kaitlin and Jaden Marshall of Sioux Lookout, Ont.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, David and Harriet (nee Leathwood) McLaren of Winnipeg Man.; and sisters, Bessie McLaren, Gladys Moyer, and Madge Janzen.
Stan was born and raised in the Winnipeg area, where he started work for the CNR in 1934 at the age of 14. He worked in Winnipeg as a bicycle messenger, then he was transferred to Sioux Lookout, and then to Fort Frances, Ont., where he was Road Master’s Clerk until his enlistment into the army in 1939.
He served his enlistment in and around London, England and then helped to liberate Holland.
He returned to Fort Frances in 1945 after his discharge from the army and resumed his job as Road Master’s Clerk for the CNR.
He married his sweetheart, Joan, in December of 1945 and they resided in Fort Frances until 1960, when he was transferred to Thunder Bay, Ont. He was transferred back to Winnipeg in 1971, where he and Joan have resided until his passing.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., in Winnipeg.
Interment will he held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to “The Lighthouse Mission,” which was one of Stan’s favourite charities, the Beacon Hill Lodge, or a charity of your choice.
