RUTH BLISS
With her husband and daughters at her side, after a lengthy and bravely-fought illness, Ruth Bliss passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Born Aug. 30, 1919 in Coatdyke, Scotland, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Bryce.
Ruth served in the Women’s Land Army, then as a young war bride, immigrated to Mine Centre, Ont. with her husband, George.
She later moved to Fort Frances, Ont., where she became an active member of the War Brides Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and took up her favourite sport of bowling.
Ruth also was an avid dancer. Until the end, Mom could be found wearing out the dance floor whenever a band was playing.
After retirement, Ruth and her husband moved to Thunder Bay.
Ruth loved travelling and, accompanied by her husband, made many trips across the United States and Canada, and around the world. Her favourite places to travel were Scotland and Australia.
She had a great sense of humour and actually was photographed riding a camel when she was 82 years old. Mom knew how to have fun and lived life to its fullest.
Ruth was predeceased by her father and mother; sisters, Mary, Phoebe, Annie, and Lizzie; and brother, Thomas.
Ruth is survived by her loving husband, George; and daughters, Merle McMillen (Ron) and Morag Elaine Maki (Elmer) of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Ruth also took pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren, Ronald McMillen of Thunder Bay, Ont., Glenn Deschamps (Kimberly) of Winnipeg, Man., Marcy Thibodeau (Robert) of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Taera Deschamps of Barrie, Ont.; and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Brandon Thibodeau.
Cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
