Dmytro (Dan) Sokil passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 13, 1999 at Kensington Village in London, Ont. in his 90th year.
He was the beloved husband of the late Micheline (Lena) Sokil (1990); dearly loved father of Louise Coppen and husband, Bill, of Red Lake, Ont., Beth Drechsler of Coburg, Ont., and Julie Patten and husband, Nic, of London, Ont.; and dear grandfather to Karl Coppen of Vancouver, B.C., Lance Drechsler of Ottawa, Ont., Scott Coppen of Boston, Mass., and Joel Drechsler of Toronto, Ont.
He was predeceased by brothers, Mike, Nick, and Harry; and sister, Katie Kowalchuk.
He is survived by sisters, Nellie Sokoloski and Anne Smith of Winnipeg, Man., and Lena Rogowski of Gimli, Man.
Dan was born Nov. 3, 1909 to Maria and John Sokil, Ukrainian pioneers who emigrated to Meleb, Man. in the late 1800s to farm the land. He moved to Fort Frances, Ont. in the 1940s and was employed at the pulp and paper mill for 30 years.
Dan was a quiet, gentle, kind man who loved animals, and enjoyed gardening and playing cards. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, his love of children and family, and his generous nature.
Friends and relatives are welcome for vigil prayers from 7-7:30 p.m. and visitation from 7:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, where the funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999 at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
