It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
Don Patrick McGee passed away peacefully on the morning of Sept. 22, 1999 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. with family at his side.
Don was born May 1, 1925 and grew up in Pinewood, Ont., where he worked for CN, helped on his family farm, and met the love of his life, Eileen McGee.
Don enlisted in the army in 1943 and served his country in World War II.
Don and Eileen were married June 21, 1949 and made a home for themselves and their eight children in Fort Frances. Don worked for more than 40 years for Canada Post as a mail carrier and retired April 30, 1988.
One month before Don retired, he was diagnosed with cancer and after a courageous battle with this disease, he was able to give his family 11 more wonderful years.
Don’s passion in life was his family, God, and a good game of golf. When his children were younger, he always made time to play a game of baseball, ice skating, or offer a helping hand.
As his children grew and had families of their own, Don often could be found playing golf with his sons-in-law and grandchildren. Don was very close to his grandchildren. He often told stories of his past experiences, teased, and always had a loving hug for them.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Henry Terrance McGee and Mary Jane McGee; and brothers, Cliff and Henry.
Don leaves to mourn his wife of 50 years, Eileen; his children, Ron (Rachel) McGee, Colleen (Ken) Campbell, Phyllis (Lynn) Kellar, Eloise (Bob) Lipskie, Cheryl McGee, Lois McGee, Rosanne (Bernie) Zimmerman, and Tammy McGee; sister, Ella Mae McGee; grandchildren, Michael, Marianne, Tiffany, Tamara (friend, Erik), Chris (friend, Jackie), Miranda, Vincent, Danielle, Brandon, Dustin, Vanessa, Joshua, Nathan, and Rebecca; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers were Christopher Kellar, Vincent McGee, Gerry Whalen, Syd Curtis, Alvin Armstrong, and Jack Armstrong. Honourary pallbearers were Ken Campbell, Lynn Kellar, Bernie Zimmerman, Bob Lipskie, Jack Waters, Timer Hydmen, and Rachel McGee.
A vigil was held Friday, Sept. 24, 1999 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Frances, followed by visitation until 9 p.m.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Your pain is gone and you are at peace.
And it is still hard to say goodbye.
God has called you to His home.
Ours is not to question why.
Know that you are loved and missed
With every tear that we cry.
We love you . . .
