In loving memory of Andy McQuaker, 80, of Rainy River, Ont., who passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at the McKellar Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Andy was born Jan. 22, 1921 in Rainy River. He moved to the Stratton area, joining Jennie and William Minty and their families, after his mother passed away. He farmed as a young man and then enlisted with the army.
He was united in marriage to Helen Hodges on Nov. 26, 1942 and in January of 1943, was sent over seas to join in the war. He served in Europe and Italy, and returned home in July, 1945.
Together, Andy and Helen built their home in Rainy River. Andy joined the Canadian National Rail and worked as a car man until his retirement in 1986.
He liked gardening and going fishing with his friends. Andy was an easy-going man who never complained; his joy in life came from seeing his family happy.
He leaves behind his wife, Helen; children, Margaret (Pat) Bartel of Morson, Ont., Nancy (Fred) Gate of Bergland, Ont., Norma (Herb) Foster of Winnipeg, Man., Marlene McNally of Rainy River, Ont., Elizabeth Dobransky of Rainy River, Ont., Donna Ivall of Rainy River, Ont., David McQuaker of Rainy River, Ont., Cheryl (Walter) Duggan of Winnipeg, Man., Sheila (Ed Cyr) Conner of Winnipeg, Man., Terry (Sherri) McQuaker of Rainy River, Ont., and Tammy (Warren Loveday) McQuaker of Emo, Ont.; 30 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sister, Mina Ducasse of Dryden, Ont.; foster sister, Florence Crasler of Calgary, Alta.; and numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.
Andy was predeceased by his parents, Agnes and David McQuaker; foster parents, Jennie and William Minty; sister, Eva Steinke; brothers, Greg, Alex, William, and John; foster sisters, Alice Scheper, Isabell McIvor, and Jane Sisco; and son-in-laws, Norman McNally, Ben Dobransky, Gary Ivall, and Robert (Red) McDonald.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Rainy River. Deacon Glen Armstrong officiated, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Michael Stone, Johnny Stone, Rob Gate, Chuck McNally, Joey Dobransky, and Shawn Dobransky.
Honourary pallbearers were Pat Bartel, Fred Gate, Fred Westover, Paul (Punkie) Halverson, Wally Duggan, Herb Foster, and Dave Cormack.
